Hit the trails and take a hike

Take in the stunning beauty of Clarke County’s natural landscape.  From scenic mountain hikes to leisurely bike rides along the Shenandoah River at Cool Spring Battlefield, there are paths for all skill levels.

Take a peaceful, leisurely stroll along local trails that wind through the open fields and forests of Clarke County.  Or if you want a more challenging workout, choose a more difficult hike topped off with a magnificent summit vista. View the Clarke County Conservation Easement Authority’s ‘Take a Hike’ trail flyer here.

Explore Clarke County’s six Appalachian Trail day hikes in Clarke County that vary from 1/2 mile to 10 miles, ranked from easy to strenuous in the Appalachian Trail Hikes Brochure.  Our trails are dog friendly when the dogs are leashed.  However, some rocky trails may not be appropriate for small dogs or children. Know Before You Go:  For your safety, please plan ahead with your trail guide.

If you want to experience the view without the hike, drive up to Bears Den Hostel at 18393 Blue Ridge Mountain Road, Bluemont, VA.  You can park your car, take a short walk to the rock outcropping for a manificent view of the Shenandoah Valley and Allegheny Mountains.  We recommend capturing a sunset for a romantic moment.  The Bears Den Hostel has cabin and camping rentals.  More details.
