We think we know a lot about women from the past, but do we really? Because the American South was a patriarchal society, most archival material that survives today was written by men, about men, and for men. Women generally only feature in relation to men: who did she marry? Who was her father? How many children did she have? These are all very important things, but they fail to tell us who the woman in question truly was. What if we let those women speak for themselves? What can the things women chose to write down tell us? This edition of Proceedings by CCHA Archivist Melanie Garvey aims to uncover just that: the lives of Clarke County women as they wanted to be known.
