Burwell-Morgan Mill
In the early 1780’s General Daniel Morgan, a true Revolutionary War hero, joined efforts with Colonel Nathaniel Burwell of Carter Hall to build a water powered mill. The mill became a center of the agricultural community life where people would gather to socialize and gossip while they waited for the miller to grind their grains from their farm.
Experience the power of the turning wooden gears, shafts, bins and old millstones every Saturday, while the miller in period clothing explains the process of grinding wheat and corn just as it was done over 200 years ago. Freshly ground flour, corn meal and grits are available for sale.
The mill is currently owned and operated by the Clarke County Historical Association. Burwell-Morgan Mill is considered a crown jewel of cultural significance that combines history, art, science, education, and engineering that is fascinating to every age group.
