Appalachian Trails
Clarke County’s 22-mile section of the Appalachian Trail offers 6 Hiking Trails from easy to strenuous. Traverse through lush forests, grassy pastures and over trickling streams. You will be awarded with spectacular views of the Shenandoah Valley and ripples of blue mountains, rushing waterfalls and a peep at the wildlife.
A good starter trail is the AT Bears Den hike, a fairly easy 1.6 mile hike from the Bears Den Trailhead that has an ample parking lot to the summit. It is a rocky trail and pet friendly. If you want to experience the view without the hike, drive up to Bears Den Hostel at 18393 Blue Ridge Mountain Road, Bluemont, VA. You can park your car, take a short walk to the rock outcropping for a manificent view of the Shenandoah Valley and Allegheny Mountains. We recommend capturing a sunset for a romantic moment. The Bears Den Hostel has cabin and camping rentals. More details.
